Description

ISOLEP-arctic is a two-component polyamine cured high solids epoxy coating.

It provides high resistance against impacts and abrasion (resistance to friction and sliding in ice).

Compatible with cathodic protection systems.

Recommended use

It can be used as single coat system for anti-corrosion protection of the underwater part of the hulls of ice-class ships, including icebreakers or in a system with VINICOR-marine AF antifouling enamel and other an-tifouling coatings, as well as with epoxy coatings for similar purposes (for example, manufactured by Jotun, International, Hempel, Wilkens) in agreement with VMP (ВМП).

ISOLEP-arctic can be used as:

- single coat system;

- with anti-fouling top coats VINICOR-marine AF, VINICOR-marine AF-S and others (for example,
produced by Jotun, International, Hempel, Wilkens) in agreement with VMP, with POLYTON-UR (UV) top coat.

- with epoxy coatings (manufactured by Jotun, International, Hempel, Wilkens, etc.) in agreement with VMP.

ISOLEP-arctic can be used to protect metal structures operated in atmospheric conditions or when immersed in a liquid, including under operating conditions in highly aggressive environments. Recommended for offshore environments, including variable level areas. It can be used both for new construction and for major repairs.

ISOLEP-arctic complies with the requirements of the "Rules for the classification and construction of sea-going ships, Part XIII", 2020.

Surface preparation

New steel surfaces and coating total overhaul:
  • degrease the metal surface to the first degree in accordance with GOST 9.402;
  • remove salts by fresh water;
  • abrasive blasting from scale and rust to degree 2 according to GOST 9.402 (Sa 2 ½ or Sa 3 ISO 8501-1) with a sharp-edged surface profile with roughness 75-115 μm, segment 2-3 of ISO comparator G (ISO 8503-1);
  • remove dust.
Repair and maintenance of ISOLEP-arctic coating:
The choice of coating repair technology is determined after assessing its condition, depending on the degree and nature of the damage.
Spot repair of the coating is carried out with the following operations:
  • degrease the metal surface to the first degree in accordance with GOST 9.402;
  • remove salts by fresh water;
  • clean damaged areas with power hand tools from rust to P St 2 (ISO 8501-2);
  • remove dust.

When carrying out repair work it is allowed to clean by water jetting to Wa 2 and flash rust grade not lower than M (ISO 8501-4).
The content of chloride on the steel surface immediately before application of ISOLEP-arctic should not exceed 50 mg/m2 (ISO 8502-9)
The time between surface preparation and painting should not exceed 6 hours. When painting in industrial premises, it is allowed to increase the time interval to 16 hours while maintaining the quality of surface preparation.
Before applying the second layer of ISOLEP-arctic or top coats coating should be cleaned of dirt, degreased and dedusted.

Application

It is recommended to apply the material at an ambient temperature of -5 to +40 °C and a relative humidity of up to 80 %.
The temperature of the surface to be painted must be at least 3 °C above the dew point.
The temperature of the base, curing agent and the material itself must be at least +20 °C.

  • before use, mix the base until smooth;
  • add a curing agent to the base with constant stirring, mix thoroughly; if necessary, dilute to working viscosity.

The heating of the mixture to the working parameters is regulated by switching the heating of the hose on and off. The viability of the mixture at a temperature of 40-50 °C is 5 minutes.
The mixing ratio of the components is controlled by the pump pressure and the color of the outgoing paint (if the mixing ratio of the components is violated, the color of the paint becomes non-uniform).
When carrying out repair work and painting small areas, it is allowed to apply ISOLEP-arctic with a brush. The material must be mixed in the indicated ratio and diluted with SOLV-EP solvent to the working viscosity, but not more than 7 % by weight. After mixing it must be used up within 20 minutes.
After completion of work, all painting equipment must be washed with SOLV-EP solvent, or solvents646, R-4, 647, 649.
ATTENTION!!! The pot life depends on the quantity, the initial temperature of the components, the temperature of the mixture and the environmental parameters. Increasing the viscosity of the paint can lead to equipment failure. When performing work, it is necessary to follow the instructions for using the equipment.

The maximum holding time before overcoating should be no more than 7 days.
If the maximum overcoating interval is exceeded:

  • before applying the subsequent layer of ISOLEP-arctic, roughen the coating with light blasting or a mechanical tool;

  • before applying POLYTON-UR (UV) top coat – clean the ISOLEP-arctic coating from dirt and chalking products by washing with clean fresh water under pressure, dry the surface, apply the ISOLEP-pro as an intermediate layer to ensure interlayer adhesion in the anti-corrosion coating system ISOLEP-arctic +POLYTON-UR (UV).
The optimal coating holding time before use is at least 7 days at (20±2)°С.
The maximum overlap time must not be exceeded.
The use of antifouling topcoats, the maximum and minimum overcoating time must be agreed with the VMP.

Storage and handling

ISOLEP-arctic is supplied as a set: The base and the curing agent packed in metal containers, depending on the set weight.

Storage conditions - in accordance with GOST 9980.5 (at ambient temperatures from minus 40 to plus 40 °С). In storage the package shall be protected from lasting direct sunlight and atmospheric condensation.

It is allowed to store the package with enamel -primer components under direct sunlight, however not more than 3 hours.

The shelf life of the base is 24 months, of the curing agent – 12 months starting with the date of manufacture.

Precautions

When working with the enamel-primer one shall observe the existing sectoral standard norms and requirements and safety measures as specified on the package label.

One shall use personal protective equipment (goggles, face masks and respirators) and avoid inhalation of solvents and contact of the composition substances with skin, eye mucosa, respiratory channels; use inside the premises is allowed only in case sufficient ventilation is provided.

ISOLEP-arctic is classified as fire-hazardous material.

The information is of general character, without consideration to the object specific nature. Use of materials for other purposes not specified here or in case other influencing factors are present shall be approved by the  VMP Holding CJSC  in writing. In case of absence of such approval the manufacturer is not held liable for the improper use of the material and the buyer falls from the right to present claims connected with the coating quality.
